This is another “process” piece that I created as an inquiry into my purpose on the planet.
I was going through a program with Jonathon Gustin, exploring my mythopoetic identity in this incarnation.
The prompt that led to this painting was “How does Evolution want to use me in this lifetime?”
One of the aspects of process painting is the continual surprise I experience.
It is as if Someone else is sending me messages through the images and symbols that spontaneously come to me.
Like dreaming awake, with metaphors and insight to unpack the next morning.
I trust my intuitive hits, paint what comes to me, persevering through doubt and questioning, and eventually surface with Divine Guidance.
In this painting, I was surprised to see that I’d painted the four elements in some form or another. Feathers/Air, Fire, Water, Stones/earth.
The two hands were painted early in the painting. One closed as if concealing a secret, or threatening with violent protection. One open and available, and able to pierce the veil as a result.
The orb of swirls in the middle represents the “Imaginal Realm” to me, what the Sufis call Alam Al-Mithal. This is one of the many names of the realm of inspiration.
It’s where psychics, mediums, artists and visionaries go to receive information. It speaks in emotional imagery.
I have had many, many names for it in my own life (Voice of God, subconscious, muse, insight, Mystery, etc), as it’s a place I am comfortable. It is the home of my native tongue.
The snail is my “Spirit Animal” (for lack of a better term). I am slow, sensitive, and stay small. But I can also create sacred shapes and leave beautiful trails of glitter behind. I am also able to traverse both air and water, a metaphor for the Imaginal Realm and the Physical plane.
This is all the meaning I can offer. The rest is for you to connect.
